What fits in 45 minutes

Forty-five minutes is a class period in many schools and a comfortable deep-work block.

  • Teachers: one lesson or exam section, shown full screen. Classroom mode keeps the digits large and the chime gentle.
  • Students: one timed practice paper, or a full problem set.
  • Work: one deep-work block on a single task.
  • Home: a workout, or dinner from prep to plate on a simple recipe.

Day math: four 45-minute blocks with 15-minute breaks take 3 hours 45 minutes, a full morning with real rest built in.

45 minute timer with relaxing music

Forty-five minutes is one class period. For a calm lesson, play rain for the whole period and the Classical playlist (about 25 minutes) during independent work, then let the room go quiet before the chime. Preview the playlist once: it includes a few hymns and seasonal pieces.

45/15 intervals

Switch to 45/15 at the top of the page: 45 minutes of focus, then a 15 minute break, with a 30 minute break after 4.

45/15 mode: 45 minutes of focus and a 15-minute break, so each cycle takes exactly one hour, with a 30-minute break after four rounds. It trades the Pomodoro's frequent short breaks for fewer, longer ones, long enough to walk, eat or get outside. It is easy to plan with, too: three cycles are three focus hours.

No study has tested 45/15 itself. In a meta-analysis of short breaks, longer breaks were linked to larger performance gains, and the authors suggest that recovering from very demanding tasks may take more than 10 minutes (Albulescu et al., 2022). Choose 45/15 when the work drains you, and 50/10 when you want more time in the task.

Want breaks built in?

The closest interval method is the 50/10 timer: 50 minutes of focus, then a 10 minute break, on repeat, with a 30 minute break after every 4 blocks.
