Rain sounds for studying

Rain is a natural broadband sound: thousands of small, random impacts that blend into a steady wash. It has no rhythm or melody to follow, which is why many people find it easy to work with. The rain on this page is generated in your browser, so it never runs out, and you can play a Nova Sounds playlist alongside it.

Pair it with the 25/5 Pomodoro timer

Rain is the friendliest default for a classic Pomodoro: familiar, steady and easy to ignore.

What the evidence says

Honest summary: there are no good studies of rain sounds and studying specifically. A 2021 meta-analysis of natural-sound studies found that natural sounds improved health and positive-mood outcomes and reduced stress and annoyance, with water sounds showing the largest effect on positive outcomes. Most of those studies were in labs, few in number and mostly with Western participants (Buxton et al. 2021). So rain is a reasonable, pleasant masking sound; it is not proven to improve study results.

How to use it with a timer

  1. Press play on rain and set it just above the room noise.
  2. Optional: add the Nova Classical or Lo-Fi playlist at a lower volume.
  3. Start the 25/5 timer. After four rounds, take the long break in real quiet.

Keep it quiet. According to the NIDCD, sound at or below 70 dBA is unlikely to cause hearing loss; long or repeated exposure at 85 dBA or more can (NIDCD). A good rule: you should still be able to hear someone speaking at normal volume next to you.
